Kickstarting My Career in Annexe Planning
Hi everyone, I’m Joe! I recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Birmingham. Throughout my studies, I developed a strong interest in applying planning principles to create sustainable and functional spaces. Find out how I kickstarted my career in annexe planning below.
Since the summer, I’ve been actively seeking opportunities to put my knowledge to work in the field of town planning. When I came across the Graduate Planner position at NAPC on LinkedIn, specializing in annexe planning, I knew it was the perfect fit.
Embracing a New Niche: Annexe Planning
The chance to delve into the specific world of annexe planning particularly appealed to me. Annexes offer a unique way to address housing needs while maximizing existing space. I saw it as an opportunity to use my planning skills in a way that directly impacts communities.
The interview process at NAPC was smooth, and I was thrilled to be offered the role! Since starting on September 12th 2022, I immersed myself in learning the intricacies of annexe planning. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to expand my knowledge.
From Urban Planning to Practical Application
My passion for planning initially sparked during my undergraduate studies in Geography at Edge Hill University. A module on urban and rural development, which touched on planning principles, sparked my curiosity. Finding this module both fascinating and successful, I decided to pursue planning further.
My Master’s program at the University of Birmingham equipped me with a strong foundation in planning law, urban regeneration, and urban property development. My dissertation, focusing on the practicalities of sustainable living in a net-zero society, further solidified my desire for a career that promotes responsible development.
NAPC’s Graduate Planner role offered the ideal opportunity to combine my academic background with the practical application of planning principles in the exciting field of annexe development. I’m excited to see what the future holds and to continue learning and growing as a planner at NAPC.
